Greetings and Common Formulas

This lab prepares you for real first-contact conversations with native speakers. You will learn how to choose the right formula based on context, relationship, and formality level, then apply everything in short, verifiable dialogs.

Why Greetings Matter

Real Context

In Romanian, the first 3-5 seconds of a conversation set the social tone. An unsuitable greeting is not only a vocabulary issue but also a register issue: it may sound too distant, too familiar, or disrespectful.

Formal vs Informal Register

Core rule: start formal when you do not know the person, then move to informal only if the other person clearly signals it. Address formulas are closely tied to pronouns: dumneavoastră (formal) versus tu (informal).

Micro-Dialog Structure

A complete minimal exchange has three parts: greeting, short social question, and polite closing. Model: Salut + Ce mai faceți? + Mulțumesc, o zi bună!.

Essential Formulas

Casual Greetings

Casual Formula Context
Salut friends, close colleagues
Bună daily informal situations
Ceao very close friends

Polite Greetings

Polite Formula Context
Bună dimineața morning, formal or neutral
Bună ziua daytime, formal or neutral
Bună seara evening, formal or neutral
Noapte bună end of day, before sleep

Conversation Closings

Closing Formula Note / Description
Pe curând Warm formula used when you expect to meet again soon.
La revedere Standard polite form, suitable for formal and neutral contexts.
Să fii sănătos Personal wish, more intimate; conveys care and respect.
Noroc bun Rare/regional formula; may sound archaic, mainly used in traditional tone.
Să auzim de bine Friendly closing with a positive future meaning.
Să ne vedem sănătoși Affectionate wish, suitable when separation may be longer.
Noapte bună Used late in the evening or before sleep.
Adio și noroc Very strong; may suggest a final goodbye. Use carefully.

Pronunciation and Rhythm

Challenging Sounds

Diacritics are essential in Romanian. For example, the letter "a" can appear as "â" or "ă". These are not optional accents, but distinct letters with their own phonetic values that can change word meaning.

Stress and Intonation

Short social questions usually have moderate rising intonation at the end: Ce mai faceți?. Avoid exaggerated pitch rise, or the sentence may sound unnatural or hesitant.

Interpretation Exercise

Repeat the following key words 3 times in sequence:

  • Salut, Salut, Salut
  • Bună, bună, bună
  • Ceau, ceau, ceau
  • Noroc, Noroc, Noroc
  • Sănătate, Sănătos, Sănătoși

Common Mistakes

False Friends

Romanian has words that look familiar to English speakers but have different meanings. For example, "hai" means "come on". Using it as a direct greeting can sound odd and may be misunderstood.

Confusion Between tu and dumneavoastră

Typical error: mixing both in one sentence, for example Ce faci dumneavoastră?. Choose one register per interaction.

Literal Translation from English

How do you do? should not be translated mechanically. In Romanian, natural greeting forms include Bună ziua, Ce mai faceți?, or Îmi pare bine, depending on context.

Politeness Omissions

Without scuze, vă rog, or mulțumesc, a message may sound imperative. Especially at the beginning, intentionally use polite formulas until the register feels natural.

Mini-Lab and Evaluation

Homework Task

Write three dialogs: one formal, one informal, and one in a service context. Mark clearly where you used the greeting formula, social question, and closing. Write these dialogs in your notebook.

How to Check Your Work

Use AI tools such as ChatGPT, Gemini, or Perplexity for short practice conversations. Start with phrases like "salut" and "ce mai faci" to test responses. You can also practice on Discord with @elucian or other people in the #romanian channel.
